How To setup MonitorWare Console 3.0

Article created 2006-09-29 by Florian Riedl.

After installation, when you start MonitorWare Console for the first time, the Configuration Wizard will be automatically executed.

Figure 1: MonitorWare Console: Startup Wizard

With this wizard you configure the most necessary functions of MonitorWare Console. Hit the "Next" button to start.

Figure 2: Dialog Box to change the underlying database

On this screen (Figure 2) you have to configure in which database MonitorWare Console should store it's configuration data. This is very important. You can either create or choose another database. For this click on "Edit..." and choose or create the database with your needs with the "ODBC Data Source Administrator"-Interface (Figure 3). Or you let MonitorWare Console save it's settings into the standard sample database which comes with Console. For this just leave the settings as they are by default.

Figure 3: Dialog Box to create a DSN

Display Login Dialog at Startup
If checked the dialog box in figure 2 appears every time at the startup of the MonitorWare Console application. If unchecked it will directly take you into the Monitorware Console main application without displaying Figure 1.

DSN
This field is mandatory. This will point to the DSN of the database which will store all the settings related to the MontitorWare Console . And later on this will work as the underlying database to which MonitorWare Console is connected.

Edit
This options opens up a dialog box for creating the DSN. A dialog similar to the one displayed opens where you can configure the settings according to your environment.
User Name
This option allows you to configure the User Name for connecting to the database.

Password
This option allows you to configure the Password for connecting to the database.

You can either use the sample database that is delivered with MonitorWare Console or use your own database.
If you choose to use a different database, then you have to insert the correct DSN that your db has and of course UserName and Password, if required. After entering the correct settings, just hit "Next" to continue.

Note: If you had created the DSN with the "Windows Integerated Security", then you don't need to give any user name or password.

Once the provider and the connection has been selected, hit the "OK" button and then the "Next" button.

If the dialog box, as shown in figure 4, is displayed, it means that the connection with the specified database has been set up properly, but the database is not yet set up correctly for usage. Hit the "Update Database" button to do that and confirm the next dialog with yes.

Figure 4: Success dialog

On the other hand, if a dialog box, as shown in figure 5 is displayed, it means that there is something wrong and the connection with the mentioned database has not been established. If this happens, use the "Previous" button to return to the last page and change the settings.

Figure 5: Connection Failure

The next step is to update the database structure (Figure 4). MonitorWare Console needs in order to save it's settings some specific tables. This can be easily done by hitting the "Update Database" button. If you use your own database we strongly suggest to create a backup before updating the database. After this is done, go on to the next step.

But if you choose to keep the default database, then you will directly see Figure 6 which means that you just have to click "Next" because the db is already up to date.

Figure 7: User Management Interface

There is one standard user implemented in MonitorWare Console. That is the Administrator. By default no password is set (this means it is nothing entered in the password field). You can set a password now and adjust the other information if you want. It is also possible to add other users at this stage if necessary. If you are ready with the user settings click "Next" to proceed.

Now you have nearly made it. Simply hit the "Finish" button to complete the basic setup of MonitorWare Console. After that you should see the loading screen of the Console and when it is done loading the main screen should appear.

Figure 9: MonitorWare Console Main Windows

If in any case you create set up a different database in the menu, the Console will tell you that a restart is necessary. Confirm that and MonitorWare Console will perform this restart. Because of the new database, no program information can be found and the wizard for the first setup will run again automatically. Be aware that you would have to make a completely new setup after that.

Now seeing the Main Window like on Figure 9 you can start working with MonitorWare Console. Refer to the Manual and the guides on the webpage for further information about the whole functionality.
